What are custom intent topics and how do I get them?
Last updated: October 8, 2026
Custom intent topics let you track intent on your own groups of keywords, beyond the standard N.Rich taxonomy. Your Solutions Engineer sets them up with you.
Standard topics vs custom intent topics
Standard intent topics come from the N.Rich taxonomy. If one is missing, request it with the form.
Custom intent topics are built from your own keywords, grouped into topics. N.Rich matches the context of the content an account reads against the context your keywords build together, rather than looking for exact keyword matches.
Custom intent topics have their own limit, separate from standard topics. Results are shown per custom topic, not per keyword.
1. Choose your keywords
Good sources for keywords:
Customer and sales insights: terms from customer conversations, sales calls or common questions
Subject matter experts: keywords curated and validated by experts in your company
SEO and SEM data: terms that already drive traffic or conversions for you
Industry and competitor research: industry terms and terms found through competitor analysis
2. Group keywords into topics
Keep each topic focused: all keywords in a topic should share one theme. For example, a "Content creation" topic could include "blogging best practices", "video content creation" and "infographic design".
Decide how to group companies, products and competitors: put them in one topic, for example "Competitors", or give each important competitor or product its own topic to track it separately.
Example for a CRM product:
Custom topic | Keywords |
Sales Automation | sales automation tools, automated follow-ups, sales pipeline automation, automated email campaigns |
Lead Management | lead scoring, lead nurturing, lead assignment rules, CRM lead tracking |
Competitor Products | Salesforce alternatives, Zoho CRM, Pipedrive, CRM vs competitors |
3. Send them to your Solutions Engineer
Share your grouped keywords with your Solutions Engineer. N.Rich enriches each topic with AI, suggesting extra keywords and refining existing ones, and sends the topics back to you for review. You can remove or adjust keywords before they go live.
4. Add them to your intent reports
Setup takes 2 to 4 weeks. Once your custom intent topics are enabled, a custom topics field appears in your intent report settings. Add the topics to a new or existing report. The first results appear after the next weekly update on Monday.
