Setting up Google Tag Manager for N.Rich

Last updated: July 6, 2026

There are two ways to install the N.Rich tag: directly in your website's code, or through Google Tag Manager. If you have a developer or technical team handling your website, they can skip this article and follow the N.Rich tag – technical installation guide instead.

If you're managing your website yourself and aren't comfortable editing code directly, Google Tag Manager (GTM) is the recommended route. It's a free tool from Google that lets you add and manage tracking scripts without touching your site's underlying code. Everything is managed from one interface, and it gives you precise control over when each tag fires - which is essential for the Cookieless/Standard mode setup.

Already have GTM installed? Skip straight to Installing the Cookieless tag.

Step 1: Create a GTM account and container

If you don't have GTM set up yet, go to tagmanager.google.com and sign in with a Google account.

  1. Click Create Account.

  2. Enter your company name and select your country.

  3. Under Container setup, enter your website URL and select Web as the target platform.

  4. Click Create and accept the Terms of Service.

GTM will generate a container - think of it as the box that holds all your tags for a given website.

Step 2: Install the GTM snippet on your website

Once your container is created, GTM will show you two code snippets to add to your website. These need to be placed on every page you want to track.

  • The first snippet goes inside the <head> tag, as high up as possible.

  • The second snippet goes immediately after the opening <body> tag.

If you manage your own website (WordPress, HubSpot, Wix, Squarespace, etc.), most platforms have a dedicated field for header/footer scripts in their settings - you don't need to edit raw HTML. If you're unsure how to do this for your specific platform, Google's own setup guide covers the most common cases.

If someone else manages your website, send them the two snippets and ask them to add them to every page.

Step 3: Verify GTM is working

Before moving on, confirm the snippet is firing correctly.

  1. In GTM, click Preview in the top-right corner.

  2. Enter your website URL and click Connect.

  3. A debugging panel will open alongside your website. If GTM is installed correctly, you'll see your container listed as connected.

Once you see the green "Connected" confirmation, GTM is ready and you can move on to installing the N.Rich tag.

What's next

GTM is set up - now you're ready to add the N.Rich tag itself.
